I am an emerging ecologist, creative, and scholar seeking to transform urban and coastal communities through design. As a native of West Baton Rouge Parish in Louisiana, I grew up hearing about the dire threat that Louisiana’s coast, its communities, their culture, and the natural habitats we enjoy and rely on are under. I remember the alarm that I felt when I heard that the LA coast was losing a football field of coastline every 100 minutes. That number has now decreased to a depressing 13 minutes. Being adjacent to the City of Baton Rouge, I have also experienced frustration with city planning choices, most notably the lack of sustainable development planning and the incorporation of human-friendly infrastructure and transportation options within the city. Be that as it may, whether on the coast or in urban landscapes, the minds, creativity, and hands of a great many individuals have been focused on solving the issues that I have mentioned to you. I wish to add my name to the list of thinkers and designers making an impact on coastal environments and urban populations. I hope to merge environmental and social issues with research to produce informed designs that empower communities and build healthy, resilient, and sustainable landscapes.
